1977 Chevrolet C10 Bonanza

Topper's high-school truck, rebuilt over the next decade to become Walter's. Every system researched and fact-checked: what to buy, what it costs, where to get it, and what it touches.

The truck and the brief

As it sits

Truck
1977 Chevrolet C10, single cab, 2WD, Bonanza trim, heavy half (“Big 10”)
Engine
454 Mark IV, two-bolt main, Quadrajet, factory HEI
Trans
Turbo 400 automatic
Rear axle
GM 12-bolt, ratio unknown (verify)
Brakes
Vacuum power assist; front disc vs drum to verify
Comfort
Factory A/C (dead since 2005), power steering (leaks)
History
Topper's daily driver 2005–07; sat ~10 years; fired on 2-stroke gas and a fresh battery

What it has to do

  • Naturally aspirated, 93 pump gas only
  • Mean lope at idle, but drivability wins
  • Cruise 65–70 mph comfortably: the 35-minute run to Overland Park
  • Occasional two-hour trips to Osceola
  • Dropped stance, semi-classic look with a modern touch, street tires
  • Bulletproof and serviceable through 2042
  • Walter's truck for high school

Before buying anything

  1. Measure and photograph the truck: axle tag and ratio, disc vs drum up front, bed length, flexplate teeth, cab mounts and floors.
  2. Compression and leak-down test the 454 before pulling it.
  3. Pull the engine; have the block sonic-checked and Magnafluxed. It decides the 489 build vs a new Dart block.
  4. Get the Scat kit's piston and balance specs in writing, then lock compression.
  5. Order nothing for the transmission, axle or brakes until the engine and ride height are final.

Three ways to build it

Keep it simple

Old-school carb + TH400

460 ci, carburetor, three-speed. Screwdriver-serviceable and the cheapest credible build, but it turns ~2,700–3,000 rpm at 70 and tops out near 450 hp.

Engine
460 ci, 9.2:1, Edelbrock 60435
Fuel
AVS2 800 carb
Trans
Rebuilt TH400
Axle
Rebuilt 12-bolt, 3.08–3.42
Power
~400–450 hp (est.)

All in$40–51k

≈2,670–2,965 rpm at 70 mph

Recommended

The daily restomod: EFI + 4L80E

489 ci stroker, self-tuning EFI, overdrive automatic with lockup, hydroboost four-wheel discs. The only recipe that meets every goal at once, and the safest for a teen driver.

Engine
489 ci, 9.2–9.3:1, Edelbrock 60455
Fuel
Terminator X Max EFI
Trans
Gearstar Level 3 4L80E
Axle
Currie 9-inch, 3.70
Power
~450–500 hp, 520–560 lb-ft (est.)

All in$58–77k

≈2,415 rpm at 70 mph

If you want a clutch

Six-speed driver: T56 Magnum

Same 489 and 9-inch as the recommended build, with a carb and a clutch pedal. The best-feeling truck, but not cheaper, and the hardest fit (tunnel, pedal, hydraulics).

Engine
Same as the restomod
Fuel
AVS2 800 carb (Sniper 2 optional)
Trans
Magnum 2.66 / .80 / .63
Axle
Currie 9-inch, 3.70
Power
~450–500 hp (est.)

All in$57–75k

≈2,030 rpm at 70 mph

All-in = researched parts and services + 10–15% misc + 2–4% freight + 7.6–8.1% Missouri sales tax, before body, paint and interior (the mid body tier adds roughly $8–16k). These are sums of researched estimates, not quotes. Power figures are estimates, not dyno results. One revision to your original brief: the research lowers static compression from 10.3–10.5:1 to 9.2–9.3:1, because a truck-friendly cam on 93 octane can't support more. The stroker's extra displacement makes up the power.
